ZetrOZ Systems’ sam Technology Can Help College Athletes Recover From Injury

Sustained acoustic medicine provides proven soft tissue healing via ZetrOZ's patented wearable ultrasound unit.

Saturday afternoons in autumn mean college sports and the return of amateur athletes to their fields, gyms and stadiums. Student-athletes can stay healthier, heal more easily from soft-tissue injuries, and return to their sport more quickly with ZetrOZ Systems' sustained acoustic medicine (sam®) technology, now covered by secondary insurance for many colleges.

On average, more than 200,000 athletes in major National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) sports are injured every year, according to a five-year study published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2015.

Researchers found high injury rates across many of the sports kicking off this fall. Among all sports, college football had the highest raw number of injuries - an estimated 47,199 over the five years. It also had one of the highest injury rates of all sports, with 9.2 athletes injured for every 1,000 athlete-exposures to potential injury (one athlete's participation in one competition or one practice).

Women's soccer had the next-highest injury rate among fall sports, with 8.4 injuries per 1,000 athlete-exposure. Among all sports, men's wrestling had the highest injury rate, at 13.1 injuries per 1,000 athlete-exposures. Women's gymnastics, at 10.4 injuries per 1,000 athlete exposures, had the greatest injury rate among women's sports.

Almost one out of four athlete injuries required more than seven days of recuperation before the athlete could return to practice or competition. Nearly half (45%) of all injuries were sprains and strains, and of those injuries, about one in four required a week of recuperation.

ZetrOZ Systems' sustained acoustic medicine (sam®) technology is proven to reduce the recovery period for those kinds of soft-tissue injuries. More than 40 clinical studies have shown that the ZetrOZ sam® X1 and 2.0 devices reduce pain and improve function without using invasive surgery or potentially addictive painkillers.

"We work with college athletic trainers nationwide, and we know that our sam® devices help heal athletes' soft-tissue injuries more quickly and help players return to practices and games sooner," said Dr. George K. Lewis, founder and CEO of ZetrOZ Systems.

A 2022 study, by authors that included three respected college athletic trainers, examined sam® usage by 239 healthcare providers for treating injuries to tendons and ligaments, joints, large muscle groups, and bone. They reported that sam® provided clinical improvement in under two weeks in more than two-thirds of cases (68.9%) and resulted in a 50% reduction in pain medication. The study concluded sam® is an "effective, safe, easy-to-use, noninvasive, comfortable, and versatile therapeutic for healing musculoskeletal injuries."

In addition, a 2022 article published in Open Orthopedics Journal surveyed athletic trainers working in professional, collegiate, and military sports medicine to evaluate ZetrOZ's sam® technology. The study found that sam® is a "fast, simple topical application yielding rapid healing without causing additional trauma to suffering athletes." The study also included follow-up interviews with the athletic trainers. The researchers reported that "Candid input from professional athletic and military ATs shows a consensus that sam® is a superior healing technology."

A 2015 level 4 clinical study by sports medicine experts at Ohio State University and Duke University found sustained acoustic medicine delivered via ZetrOZ's sam® reduced pain and improved strength in patients' medial/lateral elbow tendons and Achilles tendons.

Sustained acoustic medicine works by increasing blood vessel diameters to improve blood flow. That increases oxygenated hemoglobin at the therapy site and removes cytokine enzymes and cellular waste, resulting in more rapid healing and reduced pain.

ZetrOZ's sam® devices are the only FDA-cleared wearable ultrasound units approved for daily use at home. ZetrOZ's technology was developed, in part, with funding from the National Institute of Health, National Science Foundation, Department of Defense, and NASA. ZetrOZ Systems products are designed and manufactured in the United States and are protected by 46 U.S. patents.

America’s LGBTQIA+ Community Deeply Concerned About Losing Rights, But Optimistic About the Long-Term Future, New Harris Survey Shows

Study from The Harris Poll Thought Leadership and Futures Practice finds LGBTQIA+ community, especially younger generations, is committed to pushing back against attacks on rights

With new laws, court verdicts, and political rhetoric on marriage equality, trans athletes, gender-neutral bathrooms, drag queen shows, and other issues, new research from The Harris Poll Thought Leadership and Futures Practice finds a near-unanimous belief in the LGBTQIA+ community that their rights are in jeopardy. But the research also reveals the extraordinary levels of that community's political activism - and an unexpected optimism about the long-term future of LGBTQIA+ rights in America.

The study, "Inclusive Insights: LGBTQIA+ & Advocacy," is based on a custom survey by The Harris Poll conducted online within the United States from May 26 to June 1 among 1,110 LGBTQIA+ adults aged 18 and over. (LGBTQIA+ is an acronym for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning, intersex, asexual, and other identities.)

"You might expect that some people within the LGBTQIA+ community are concerned about their rights, given societal trends and recent events," said Tim Osiecki, Senior Research Manager at The Harris Poll Thought Leadership and Futures Practice. "And indeed, our research shows that the concern is almost universally shared. It also shows that the community - especially younger members from the Gen Z and Millennial generations - is responding with a broad and significant commitment to efforts to preserve those rights and that they ultimately believe the tide will turn."

A chief finding of the study is that the LGBTQIA+ community is deeply concerned about legislation passed or advancing at the state and federal levels. Respondents were almost unanimous (98%) in their concern that one or more existing rights could be taken away from LGBTQIA+ people.

Four out of five (81%) agreed with the statement "With hundreds of anti-LGBTQIA+ bills pending legislation in the U.S., I feel very nervous about my rights as an LGBTQIA+ individual." Even more (85%) agreed that "There are many groups within the LGBTQIA+ community that often get overlooked or picked on by politicians and lawmakers."

Respondents' top concerns:

  • Protection against discrimination in schools (87%)
  • Discrimination protection in the workplace (85%)
  • Right to access housing (84%)
  • Right to get married (83%)
  • LGBTQIA+ inclusive education (83%)

However, the community is far from despairing - LGBTQIA+ people are putting time, energy, creativity, money, and votes into defending their rights. More than nine out of 10 (93%) LGBTQIA+ people reported taking some sort of political action other than voting to defend their rights.

The study found that the vast majority (84%) of LGBTQIA+ people vote regularly, with 71% voting in federal elections and 67% in local elections - well above typical nationwide marks of about 52% and 12 to 25%, respectively.

Over half (58%) donate money, about a third march or protest (39%), attend political events (32%), or write letters (30%) advocating for their rights. More than one in three (37%) said they have considered running for political office - and that percentage jumps to 60% among transgender respondents.

The study also found that members of younger generations (Gen Z, Millennials) are more likely to engage in activism than older members of the LGBTQIA+ community - in some areas, twice as likely. For example, 34% of younger LGBTQIA+ people have volunteered or worked on a campaign, compared to 19% of their older counterparts; 29% of younger generations belong to organized groups that engage in political efforts, compared to 13% of older generations.

The study also closely examined specific issues such as the drag queen bans that have received prominent media coverage. Eight out of 10 respondents said they were concerned about those bans (81%) and feared they could "snowball into lawmakers taking away more and more rights" (80%).

In addition, the study focused on issues faced by subsets of the LGBTQIA+ community, people who identify as BIPOC or transgender.

Almost three-quarters (72%) of queer BIPOC (Black, indigenous, people of color) members said they had trouble finding communities and resources that understand them, and about two-thirds (64%) have to "code switch" or change how they communicate to fit in with the two communities. Almost half (48%) said they have had to relocate to avoid hostile laws or political environments (compared to 40% of queer non-BIPOC members).

Possibly reflecting the current political climate, nearly nine out of 10 (87%) trans people agreed with the statement "Our society values humanity in AI and robots more than in trans people." More than six out of 10 (62%) said they have relocated due to hostile laws or political environments.

And yet, even as they hold deep concerns about rhetoric and legislation and devote themselves to political activism to defend their rights, people in the LGBTQIA+ community still hold optimism about the future. A strong majority (84%) agreed with the statement "I am hopeful that things are going to improve on the LGBTQIA+ rights" and about two out of three said that the improvement might be soon, agreeing that "I think it's likely that things will improve for LGBTQIA+ rights within the next five years."

"It's clear from this study and our previous work that the country's LGBTQIA+ community believes that though our society has made progress on these issues, we still need to work to preserve and expand the community's rights, and that people believe that progress is not only possible but probable," Osiecki said.

The Motor Enclave ‘Motomural’ Set to Become Iconic Tampa Landmark

Designed and painted by acclaimed Philadelphia mural artist, Glossblack

The Motor Enclave ‘Motomural’ Set to Become Iconic Tampa Landmark
The Motor Enclave 'Motomural'

The Motor Enclave 'Motomural' as seen from the East side of I-75.

The Motor Enclave (TME) unveiled Tampa Bay's newest mural today, on the I-75 side of its 37,000 square foot Event Center just North of the I-4 interchange. The mural was designed and executed by prominent Philadelphia-based muralist Glossblack. Branded as the "Motomural," the nearly 5,000 square foot mural is destined to become a landmark at this main interchange to Tampa and Orlando that sees over 142,000 vehicles a day.

The Motor Enclave founder, Brad Oleshansky, collaborated with Glossblack closely on the project, keeping it under wraps until painting began on September 1st. The mural features a combination of motorsports-themed iconography, vintage roadside references and a few related to Tampa history and culture.

"The goal of this mural is to pay homage to many things at once; The Motor Enclave branding, classic Americana, motorsports, patina & graffiti elements, and of course a nod to Tampa. It's a 'favorite things' mural for TME that speaks to how unique they are," said Jimmy McMenamin of Glossblack. "Much of my artwork revolves around balancing color while creating building blocks that tell a larger story. I love all things typography, vintage signage, neon lettering, dynamic shadow/lighting, and retro Americana. For that reason, working with TME was the perfect fit."

"I am thrilled to have this piece of the project come to fruition. It's been a fun process working with Glossblack to make this project come to life," said Oleshansky. "It's been just as fun keeping the artwork a surprise for my team here at TME. But the wait is finally over and what better way to show off our soon-to-open Event Center."

The Motomural is now visible for all to see on the West side of I-75 just North of the I-4 interchange.
