As Baseball Season Begins With New Rules, ZetrOZ Systems’ sam Technology is Critical for Mitigating Injury Risk

Studies show hamstring and UCL injuries are most common in opening weeks, and sustained acoustic medicine is effective treatment for those soft-tissue injuries.

Baseball is back, which means balls and strikes, hits and homers - and hamstring injuries. Studies show baseball's most common injury, hamstring tendon tears, is more prevalent in the season's first weeks, as is a common elbow injury. And this spring, both could become more frequent as rule changes reduce players' recovery time between pitches and plays. One way to mitigate the risks of these injuries is ZetrOz Systems' sustained acoustic medicine sam® device, which effectively treats soft-tissue injuries and can help players stay on the diamond.

Several studies document the prevalence of injuries early in a season. A 2019 study in The Orthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine used six years of Major League Baseball's own injury tracking database to examine trends in hamstring injuries, which it found was the most common injury in baseball.

"In various professional sports leagues (NFL, NBA, MLB), hamstring strains have been found to occur earlier in the season. Our study found similar results, with the highest number of hamstring sprains in April and May," the authors reported. "These factors may have an association with poor conditioning at the start of the season." 

About 40 percent of hamstring injuries occur in April and May, the analysis found. The rate of hamstring strains in Major League Baseball increased from one injury every 39 games in 2011 to one in every 30 games in 2016, with a similar trend in minor league baseball.  

The pattern was the same in injuries to the elbow's ulnar collateral ligament (UCL), according to a 2021 report from the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, with April and May as peak months for UCL injuries. They also found that injuries within the first 90 days of the season were more severe, more commonly requiring surgery to repair them.

"Throwing athletes may have increased risk for an elbow injury at the start of the season because they have not attained midseason levels of muscle strength and endurance," the authors wrote. They also found that pitchers' shoulders had less range of motion early in the season, likely making them more vulnerable to injury. 

Some observers fear injuries will be more common this year, with Major League Baseball now using a pitch clock that requires pitchers to throw to the batter within 15 seconds, or 20 seconds with a runner on base. That means pitchers have less recovery time between pitches, and batters have less recovery from swings or from running out foul balls. 

A 2016 study in the Journal of Sports Science modeled the effects of the shorter rest period on pitching. The authors found that players would have more fatigue in the forearm muscles that stabilize the elbow, "increasing strain on the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) and possibly increasing injury risk." 

Treatment with ZetrOZ's sam® technology effectively treats injuries to tendons of the leg, elbow and other areas of the body. Among many studies demonstrating the system's efficacy, a 2015 level 4 clinical study by sports medicine experts at The Ohio State University and Duke University found sustained acoustic medicine delivered via ZetrOZ's sam® reduced pain and improved strength in patients' medial/lateral elbow tendons and Achilles' tendons.  

Sustained acoustic medicine works by increasing blood vessel diameters to improve blood flow. That increases oxygenated hemoglobin at the site of the therapy and removes cytokine enzymes and cellular waste, with a result of more rapid healing and reduced pain.

At the Annual Boston Marathon Wreath Ceremony, held at the Consulate General of Greece in Boston and cosponsored by the Alpha Omega Council of Boston, Consul General Symeon Tegos presented four olive branch wreaths from Greece to the Boston Athletic Association, which will be used to crown the winners of Monday's 127th running of the Boston Marathon.

"I am honored to present these four gold wreaths, cut from the plains of Marathon, as a gift from Greece. These wreaths connect Greece with the Boston Marathon and ideals of democracy and peace," said Tegos.

Also present at the ceremony were Meb Keflezghi, winner of the 2014 Boston Marathon and Olympic Medalist. Meb spoke of reuniting with his father in Athens, Greece, after his family fled war in Eritria. The family then moved to the United States. Meb spoke of his special connection with Greece and how proud he was to be wrapped in the American flag after winning the Boston Marathon and then being crowned with a golden olive wreath from Greece.

Worcester County Sheriff Lew Evangilides spoke of his experience running the Boston Marathon and thanked the Consul General reminding all of the Boston Marathon's connection to Greece.

The Wreath Ceremony was established 40 years ago, when the Republic of Greece and the Boston Athletic Association formally established the Wreath Ceremony, in which the Greek people gift the wreaths to the BAA.

Today's Wreath presentation was cosponsored by the Consulate General of Greece in Boston and the Alpha Omega Council of Boston, a Greek-American organization cultivating the ideals of Hellenism by uniting Americans of Hellenic descent and Philhellenes through philanthropy and fellowship. "The Marathon is a time when the connection between our countries shines brightest," said Alpha Omega President Paul Tsitsopoulos. "I am very proud that we have been able to keep these beautiful traditions alive and help remind all of the Boston Marathon's roots in Ancient Greece."

The wreaths are offered in the name of Stylianos Kyriakides, a true humanitarian, patriot, and marathon champion. His 1946 Boston Marathon victory, over renowned marathoner Johnny Kelley, is still considered one of the most memorable in Boston Marathon history.  After his victory, Kyriakides toured the United States, raising funds and medical supplies for his countrymen who were suffering from the aftermath of WWII and their heroic resistance to Nazism. Upon returning home to Athens, he was met in the streets by a million people.

The Boston Marathon will take place Monday, April 17, 2023.

The 2023 U.S. Open Polo Championship® has officially closed out the American high-goal polo season at the USPA National Polo Center (NPC) - Wellington, the sport's premier destination, with a thrilling win by Team Park Place over Team Valiente in a score of 12-11, with more than $200,000 awarded to finalists in the 2023 tournament season. 

The U.S. Open Polo Championship is recognized as being the most prestigious tournament in the United States and showcases some of the world's best polo players and equine athletes. Played at the U.S. Polo Assn. Stadium at NPC, the U.S. Open final achieved record attendance and aired to a record global audience across multiple ESPN platforms.

In the action-packed final game, which was interrupted at half-time by heavy downpours on Sunday, April 23, and finished Monday, April 24, Valiente, led by Adolfo Cambiaso, played Park Place, led by Hilario Ulloa. The game was neck and neck, where ultimately Park Place prevailed in the closing minutes of the sixth chukker as Ulloa received a pass from teammate Juan Britos and ran the ball up the field to put his team up by one, guaranteeing the win. This amazing play gave Park Place their very first U.S. Open Polo Championship title with a final score of 12-11, taking home $100,000 in addition to the highly coveted trophy.
