CFPB Publica Reporte de Prestatarios de Compre Ahora y Pague Luego

WASHINGTON, D.C. – La Oficina para la Protección Financiera del Consumidor (CFPB, por sus siglas en inglés), ha publicado un nuevo reporte analizando los perfiles financieros de prestatarios de préstamos Compre Ahora y Pague Luego. Aunque muchos de ellos usan este producto sin dar indicaciones de dificultades financieras, estos prestatarios son más proclives a ser usuarios activos de otros tipos de productos crediticios como tarjetas de crédito, préstamos personales y estudiantiles. También es más factible que muestren niveles de dificultad financieras más altos que aquellos que no utilizan el producto. Por ejemplo, es más probable que los prestatarios de Compre Ahora y Pague Luego estén muy endeudados, o tengan saldos pendientes o atrasos en sus tarjetas de crédito, comparados con quienes no usan productos Compre Ahora y Pague Luego. Estos prestatarios también son más proclives a usar servicios financieros con altas tasas de interés como préstamos del día de pago, préstamos de casas de empeño, y sobregiros en sus cuentas bancarias. El reporte es una continuación de investigaciones hechas previamente por la CFPB del mercado de préstamos Compre Ahora y Pague Luego.

“Una idea equivocada que tienen los prestatarios de Compre Ahora y Pague Luego, es que carecen de acceso a otras formas de crédito. Nuestro análisis muestra que éstos son más proclives a usar otros productos crediticios”, dijo el director de la CFPB Rohit Chopra. “Dado que Compre Ahora y Pague Luego es un producto similar a otras formas de crédito, nos estamos asegurando de que los prestatarios tengan protecciones y que las compañías cumplan normas similares a las de otros productos”, continuó.

El reporte muestra que es mucho más probable que un prestatario de Compre Ahora y Pague Luego activamente use otros productos crediticios. Estos prestamistas frecuentemente muestran más altos signos de dificultades financieras comparados con gente que no sea prestataria. Algunos ejemplos incluyen tener deudas más grandes e índices de utilización más altos en tarjetas de crédito, mayor probabilidad de tener sobregiros, más altas posibilidades de arrastrar un saldo en al menos una tarjeta de crédito, y más alto índice de utilización de servicios financieros alternativos, como préstamos del día de pago, los cuales cobran altas tasas de interés. Sin embargo, el reporte también descubre que muchas de estas diferencias existen antes de que las personas tomen un préstamo Compre Ahora y Pague Luego, y destaca la necesidad de investigar más profundamente si estos productos causan cualquier impacto en los niveles de deuda de los consumidores.

En resumen, 17% de los consumidores que tienen récords crediticios, usaron un préstamo Compre Ahora y Pague Luego en el año previo a la realización de la encuesta. Otros hallazgos del reporte incluyen:

  • Casi el 95% de los prestatarios de Compre Ahora y Pague Luego tuvieron al menos un récord crediticio en otra cuenta, comparado con un 86% de quienes no son prestatarios.
  • Prestatarios de Compre Ahora y Pague Luego mostraron significativamente más altos índices de utilización de varios otros productos de crédito, al compararlos con quienes no son prestatarios, incluyendo en cuentas con comercios (62% contra 44%), préstamos personales (32% contra 13%), y préstamos estudiantiles (33% contra 17%).
  • Afroamericanos, Latinos y mujeres son más proclives a usar productos Compre Ahora y Pague Luego, junto a consumidores que tienen niveles de ingresos entre $20,001 y $50,000.
  • Entre los consumidores que tienen créditos abiertos o tarjetas de comercios, préstamos personales, automotrices o estudiantiles, o hipotecas, más del doble de los prestatarios de Compre Ahora y Pague Luego estaban en incumplimiento, con uno o más de estos productos, por 30 o más días.
  • Dieciocho por ciento de los prestatarios de Compre Ahora y Pague Luego tiene al menos un incumplimiento reportado en otra cuenta, contra sólo el 7% de quienes no son prestatarios. Los índices de incumplimiento entre estos prestatarios son substancialmente más altos en tarjetas de crédito y de comercios (9%), comparado con quienes no lo son (3% y 1% respectivamente).

Los prestatarios de Compre Ahora y Pague Luego también típicamente mostraron puntajes crediticios más bajos que quienes no lo son. Los no prestatarios en promedio mostraron puntajes clasificados como “near-prime” o cercano a alto (670-739), mientras que los prestatarios tuvieron en promedio puntajes “sub-prime” o bajos (580-669). Los bajos puntajes crediticios conllevan a tasas de interés más altas en productos tradicionales, lo que hace que los préstamos Compre Ahora y Pague Luego, sin tasas de interés, sean una opción atractiva que muchos prestatarios buscan.

Los datos en el reporte del Uso de Compre Ahora y Pague Luego por los Consumidores, provienen de la encuesta Llegando al Final del Mes (en inglés), hecha en el año 2022, y del Panel de Créditos al Consumidor de la CFPB, el cual contiene una muestra anónima de récords provenientes de burós de crédito. El reporte no pudo distinguir si el uso de Compre Ahora y Pague Luego lleva a que existan más incumplimientos en otras obligaciones, o si los consumidores que ya pasan por dificultades son más proclives a solicitar préstamos Compre Ahora y Pague Luego para cancelar deudas con altas tasas de interés.

National Donut Day is Friday, June 2, and LaMar's will be partnering with The Salvation Army to host an annual fundraising and community engagement event. Each participating LaMar's location will also be giving away free donuts to everyone who visits a store.

National Donut Day is celebrated on the first Friday of every June — a tradition dating back to 1917, when Salvation Army volunteers known as the "Donut Lassies" made donuts for soldiers on the front lines of World War I. In celebration of this tradition, LaMar's will be partnering with The Salvation Army to host its 9th Annual National Donut Day fundraising campaign. The campaign will be hosted by various LaMar's locations nationwide, and it will include free donuts, donations to The Salvation Army, and community engagement with local police and fire departments. The goal of this campaign is to spread joy and give back to the community, just like the Donut Lassies did over 100 years ago.

This year's National Donut Day fundraiser will be a celebration unlike any other. In addition to raising funds for The Salvation Army through donations, LaMar's will match all online donations made during the week of May 28th. Each participating location will be handing out free Ray's Original Glazed donuts to customers, along with LaMar's National Donut Day t-shirts, while supplies last. LaMar's will be partnering with local police and fire stations, who will volunteer their time to hand out the free donuts and t-shirts to community members at select participating locations.

In addition to celebrating the holiday at LaMar's stores, The Salvation Army will be delivering thousands of LaMar's donuts to the Denver and Aurora Police Departments as well as locations in Kansas City, MO, Omaha, NE, and Wichita, KS, for National Donut Day. Staff and members of the Army, along with Aurora police officers, will also hand deliver donuts to veterans at the VA Medical Center in Aurora, CO. The Salvation Army brass band will be at the medical center at 10 a.m. to perform and celebrate the national holiday.

"The Salvation Army's tireless mission to keep children clothed, sheltered, and fed is an enduring reminder that we need to do what we can to support our community members," shared Temi Osifodunrin, LaMar's Director of Marketing and Advertising. For customers who can't make it to a LaMar's location on National Donut Day, LaMar's will also be mailing out "Share the LaMar's Donut Day Love" cards to community members in surrounding neighborhoods. These cards can be used to redeem one free donut with a hole and a small coffee. Specialty donuts & coffee will be available but will incur an upcharge when used with the card.
