Gratz College Launches America’s First Master’s Degree in Antisemitism Studies

First Cohort to Begin Fall 2024

Gratz College Launches America’s First Master’s Degree in Antisemitism Studies

Gratz College is launching the first Master of Arts degree program in Antisemitism Studies in the United States in Fall 2024. This ground-breaking program will help fill the vacuum of knowledge about antisemitism across Jewish, non-Jewish, and governmental organizations responsible for generating policy to combat prejudice at a time of unprecedented Jew hatred.

It will:

• Provide an academic home for those seeking to develop both a deep theoretical and practical understanding of antisemitism;

• Help generate new and impactful research on the factors that contribute to growing antisemitism and test interventions that can successfully combat it; and

• Arm educators and practitioners with the most effective antisemitism pedagogy and programming.

Through degree concentrations in teaching, advocacy and research, graduates of this program will be uniquely qualified for prominent careers in education, think tanks, government relations, public policy, and community organizations (Jewish and non-Jewish).

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro is eager to see this program take shape:

“We’re seeing a dangerous rise in antisemitism, hatred, and bigotry across our country – and it’s more important than ever that Pennsylvanians be equipped with a thorough knowledge of our shared history and the skills to discern fact from fiction. Gratz College is already renowned for its Holocaust and Genocide Studies programs, and I am encouraged the College is expanding upon that work with a new Master’s degree in Antisemitism Studies. I wish the faculty, staff, and especially the inaugural class of Antisemitism Studies students, great success in their work.”

The program is directed by Dr. Ayal Feinberg, antisemitism studies expert and Director of the Center for Holocaust Studies and Human Rights at Gratz College. The program boasts a distinguished interdisciplinary faculty from academia and leading public advocacy organizations. Despite its infancy, the degree has been endorsed by nearly one hundred scholars and public policy experts from around the world. Professor of Political Science at Kalamazoo College R. Amy Elman asserts, “With an emphasis on operationalizing knowledge, informed teaching and ethical advocacy, Gratz’s innovative graduate program fulfills a deep need in countering antisemitism.”

Gratz’s Antisemitism Studies program is also establishing ground-breaking partnerships with the world’s most prominent Jewish organizations and programs to combat antisemitism in the classroom, on campus, and in professional workspaces. In the first such partnership, Gratz and The Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History have joined forces to launch the National Education Fellowship on Antisemitism. The aim of this fellowship is to generate and assess paradigm-shifting middle and high school curriculum to reduce Jew-hatred and prejudice more broadly.

As an early adopter of online education, a 128-year history of Jewish learning, and home to the world’s largest graduate program in Holocaust and Genocide Studies, Gratz is uniquely qualified to take on this necessary and overdue program.

On March 4, 2024, the master’s degree program will kick-off with a series of public lectures, including by scholars serving as affiliate faculty for the program. On April 2, 2024, Dr. Avinoam Patt, inaugural director of NYU’s Center for Study of Antisemitism and the Maurice Greenberg Professor of Holocaust Studies, will deliver a keynote lecture, titled, "Awake My People": Jewish Responses to Antisemitism in the Modern Period.” Additional talks will take place before the program officially begins in August.

Prospective students eager to start may apply now and take courses as early as March 2024 with electives in Antisemitism Studies already developed as a preview to the program.

Gratz College is grateful to the Isidore and Penny Myers Foundation for generously supporting the launch of the Antisemitism Studies program. Jay Myers, Board Chair, shared: “The Isidore and Penny Myers Foundation, a family foundation guided by Jewish American values, sees great worth in educating future generations about the roots of Antisemitism, and by doing so, working to combat it. This degree program will create scholars who can devote their talent to meet this challenge. Our Foundation is proud to support this work and by so doing, meet our obligation to help repair the world.”

nXlvl: The Revolutionary Platform Empowering Athletes, Fans, and Brands

nXlvl™ (Next Level) launched a suite of social engagement technology with its fan club, "The Block," on September 2, 2023.

nXlvl is a groundbreaking tech platform at the intersection of college sports and digital innovation built for athletes by athletes. With its comprehensive solution to democratize influence and level the playing field for college athletes, nXlvl is transforming the landscape of NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness).

"There is no better place in the world for nXlvl to launch than The University of Michigan," said nXlvl Director of Business Development, Gabe Newburg. "Through creation of The Block, I approached it from the lens of a fan and former student athlete to build something truly special for all involved. The Block, powered by nXlvl, surrounds the student athlete with all the right tools to capitalize on the ever-changing NIL landscape and gives the fans an experience like no other."

Aimed at diehard fans, student athletes, and brand marketers, nXlvl is set to revolutionize how athletes connect with fans, monetize their talent, and engage with brands while maintaining compliance with NCAA regulations.

"As a former student athlete myself, I wanted to build the platform I wish I had when I was in school. We're offering fans an immersive sports experience and providing brands with authentic ambassador opportunities," said nXlvl's CEO, Tom Broering. "We're thrilled to provide a groundbreaking platform that empowers athletes, engages fans, and facilitates meaningful brand collaborations within the realm of college sports. nXlvl is poised to reshape the way athletes monetize their NIL on a platform that focuses on safety and privacy, and ensures athletes are abiding by NCAA regulations."

Blake Williams, former NFL Coach, has teamed up with nXlvl as President of Partnerships. Williams sees nXlvl and The Block as an opportunity for students to begin to take control of their current journey, and their future success, stating, "For the next generation of athletes, success isn't just about what happens during the game. It's about creating a lasting foundation for their futures. That's why I've teamed up with nXlvl - to ensure they have every opportunity to shine, connect, and build their own legacy."

Student athletes on the nXlvl app gain unprecedented exposure and control over their personal brand. The platform offers a reimagined social profile that enables athletes to showcase their athletic achievements and connect with other athletes and fans, all while building a strong network to enhance their NIL value.

Recruiters can take advantage of simplified talent discovery with nXlvl's streamlined tools. By accessing athlete profiles, recruiters gain instant insights into key performance stats, athletic achievements, social media presence, and highlight reels. The platform's NCAA-compliant direct messaging feature facilitates authentic relationships between recruiters and athletes. The app streamlines the communication process, helping recruiters stay connected during every stage of an athlete's journey.

Brands seeking authentic athlete endorsements will find their perfect match on nXlvl. By going beyond bios and headshots, brands can access comprehensive athlete profiles, including school affiliations, statistics, and engaging content galleries. This in-depth understanding helps brands and agents connect with athletes whose values align with their own, forging impactful partnerships and democratizing influence for student athletes.

William H. Sadlier, Inc. has partnered with Littera Education to provide personalized, high-impact tutoring using Wiley Blevins's highly acclaimed From Phonics to Reading curriculum to help schools and districts put students on the path to reading success.

Many students continue to face difficulties learning to read, as evidenced by declines in fourth grade reading scores on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). This partnership offers a means for targeting students' early literacy skills in need of improvement and creating a personalized learning experience to put them on a path for achieving significant growth.

From Phonics to Reading is a research-based foundational skills program aligned with the Science of Reading. This program addresses all the foundation skills and fosters students' understanding and working knowledge of print concepts, phonological awareness, phonics and word recognition, and fluency. It has received "Meets Expectations" by EdReports, an independent, nonprofit, education-led, curriculum reviewer of K-12 instructional materials.

"Students have a wide range of foundational skill needs," said Theresa Thompson, President and CEO of Sadlier. "With the From Phonics to Reading curriculum, Littera virtual tutors can provide rich, impactful, high-quality, individualized phonics instruction and practice to every student who needs it." Learn more here.

Using the Littera Tutoring Management System (TMS), Littera virtual tutors can deliver the From Phonics to Reading curriculum to students in 1:1 or small group tutoring sessions. As tutors log feedback in the Littera TMS, districts can monitor student progress in real time.

"Combining a comprehensive, evidence-based early literacy program with the individualized care and attention of a highly trained tutor is a powerful combination for early readers," said Justin Serrano, CEO and co-founder of Littera. "Littera puts relationships first, pairing students with a consistent tutor so they build trust and rapport as they develop key skills. This not only helps students progress at a faster rate, but it helps them develop a love for reading."
